How Drones Are Used in Science

A drone is a camera, a sensor platform, and a small aircraft at the same time. That combination makes it useful in places where walking, driving, or flying a plane would be too slow, too expensive, or too dangerous.

Environmental monitoring

Drones can map shoreline change, sample water, and survey vegetation across large areas in a single flight. Researchers use the imagery to track erosion, invasive species, and storm damage.

Agriculture

Farmers use drones to spot crop stress, target irrigation, and estimate yields. A student who learns to fly, capture, and interpret images is practicing the same loop a professional uses.

Mapping and construction

Surveyors and construction teams use drone photography to measure sites and track progress. The output is not just a picture; it is a measurement that can be compared over time.

Disaster response

After a storm or fire, drones can inspect areas before people enter them. That helps responders decide where it is safe to work.

Where students start

iSTREAM’s Summer STREAM Camp includes drone engineering and flight, and Aviation Day introduces students to aircraft and aviation careers. Both are designed for beginners. The first step is learning how the machine works, then how to use what it collects.
